[Speed] Slow often in the evenings - NYC

I'm finding that my internet speed is dropping very low, usually during the evenings. It hovers around 2MBps when it drops (I have 10 MBps service.) The levels on the modem are fine according to the RCN speed tests and I connect my laptop directly to the cable modem to do the tests. Is this probably caused by traffic from other people on my cable segment, and if so anything I can do about it?

That's why I'm "lil"hurricane ;)

The above suggestion for smokeping might be a good way to start documenting some info.

Other things you can tell us is about your equipment.
What modem..router..etc.

Trying out smokeping now. Thanks for the heads up on that.

Modem is a Motorola SB5101 Surfboard. I connect my laptop directly to the modem to do the tests, so no router involved. Pings to ny.speedtest.rcn.com are average around 40ms when I am getting 2MBps. The latency seems fine even if the throughput is low?

What Operating system is the lappy?

One is a Mac and the other is a Windows machine. Both the same results.

Mac Laptop = OSX 10.5.7
Windows Laptop = Vista

Ok, I was going to suggest optimizing by tweaking, but if it's on both, won't matter much.

Can you post your signal levels from the SB5101? Up & Down?

Once your graph starts graphing come back and see if you can post it. The link it gives you will not display your IP address
(which is good because this is a public board)

The more info our "unofficial officials" have..and our helpful members, they better they can assist. We'll be here :)

That page didn't exist, but going to »192.168.100.1/ led me to an alternate signal page. The figures look fine from the FAQ.

Good job on obtaining the signal levels.

The smokeping needs to graph a lil bit to show anything substantial

A Line Quality Test might be more immediate, but is only for registered members
