[Cable HSI] Speedtest

I know this may have been asked and replied to somewhere. However I am not finding the answer.

I have heard by about 50 people that, when running a speed test, you should pick the server that is closest to your location. Those 50 people, 50% say it does not matter.

So my question is it true and not some old internet tale. I could very well be wrong, however if our nations(USA) internet runs along a backbone would it really matter. If you use a server in Chicago or one in New York or LA. Should you use one in your home state. I would think that using a server in your home state would be pointless because not all websites are in your home state.

Thanks I know this is a lot just trying to get some expert feedback

Also I am in Iowa. So you can see my question either coast is far away

Re: [Cable HSI] Speedtest

The point behind performing the test to a location close to you is:

A. You can say WOW !! look how fast my "speeds" can be.

The people who run speed tests all the time will say closest is better because they are always nitpicking the kilobytes or the milliseconds and either brag about their speeds or are pissed cause they do not see the max they are "supposed" to get.

B. A closer test does eliminate any possible route issues for troubleshooting purposes.

It really only depends on the purpose of the test. For a general " hmm I wonder what is my speed now" test it does not really matter. Probably the reason why you got 50% one way and the other.
