whats going on here?

i'm receiving slower than normal ping times when playing games. after running a trace to a server about 25 miles from me, i see that i'm getting double the ping than normal:

1 29 ms 30 ms 42 ms 73.97.122.1
2 29 ms 29 ms 29 ms ge-1-17-ur01.federalway.wa.seattle.comcast.net [68.86.113.241]
3 29 ms 30 ms 30 ms te-5-3-ur02.federalway.wa.seattle.comcast.net [68.86.96.34]
4 33 ms 31 ms 32 ms te-0-8-0-2-ar01.seattle.wa.seattle.comcast.net [68.86.96.38]
5 31 ms 32 ms 32 ms pos-0-3-0-0-cr01.seattle.wa.ibone.comcast.net [68.86.90.209]
6 26 ms 31 ms 36 ms e1-4.cr01.sea01.mzima.net [75.149.228.182]
7 24 ms 22 ms 22 ms ge0-nuclearfallout.cust.sea01.mzima.net [72.37.232.54]
8 29 ms 28 ms 30 ms router.int.fisher.nuclearfallout.net [66.150.165.189]
9 33 ms 34 ms 33 ms c-66-150-164-37.internap-seattle.nuclearfallout.net [66.150.164.37]

i'm pretty sure the first few hops after leaving my computer shouldn't be that high. any ideas on what could cause this?

Re: whats going on here?

the problem is in hop #1 which in your case appears to be the connection between your modem and the CMTS..

the problem could be in order of frequency (per my 6+ yrs as a service tech)

1) running a Torrent app or some other file transfer app running in the background (uploads can especially saturate a link)

2) poor signal levels (you can usually check your levels by going to »192.168.100.1 , please do so and post the following as per »Comcast High Speed Internet FAQ »How To Get Help! )

3) misconfigured modem config file

4) bad modem

Re: whats going on here?

thanks for the quick response :)

1) well i don't have anything running that i know of, i've ran adaware and antivirus and everything came back clean. bypassing my router also didn't change the issue.

2) downstream power: 0.5 dBmV
downstream signal to noise: 39.4 dB
upstream power: 47.5 dBmV

3) any way i can go about checking on this?

4) if this was the case, wouldn't my modem have problems 24 hours a day or could it be intermittent still? i forgot to mention, late at night and early morning my connection is stable.

any other help are much appreciated :)

Re: whats going on here?

Please clarify your first post - are you running the tracert while in a game?

Re: whats going on here?

wel it looks like my connection finally works - i typed this last night when it was up for 10 minutes around 920 last night
=======================================
@ 1443, I couldnt resolve websites, then massive packet loss when tracert to google (the ip returned from the ping, obviously)

@1450, called comcast after doing the usual stuff (testing nic, check/switch cables, powercycle modem & router, remove router from equasion). Unable to ping websites, but can w/ IP's so a dns issue - I reported that & @ 1544, it was back on.

cool. play some wow, pwn some horde

@1720, *massive failure*. booted off vent, out of wow, cant ping, cant tracert (hardware error, hadnt seen that before), checked modem's logs, and it was requesting an IP every 3 or 4 minutes, and failing.

A buddy of mine is a site tech for comcast & I ran it by him - my oldskool moto surfboard had an optimal connection apparently - the right dB/dBvM on the down/up. he says to call comcast again & have them send a site tech out to check the coax.

So I call comcast @ the # on the monthly statement, and i guess they close after 1800 Pacific time, becuase it prompted me to call another comcast #, which then prompted me to call the same number.

@2122, its back up (for the moment), so i decided to check forums. and am now unable to post.

@0400 Nov 12th - well it *looks*like its back up, so I clicky on sumbit
