Linksys Pap2 Hardware support
I bought a Linksys Pap2 from hongkong it is unlocked.
I set it up with my 2wire router AT&T service. However, there is no ring tone in the phone. The first step where I need to dial **** and 110# is not working because the phone does not have a dial tone.
The PAp2 device just has the red light blinking, the blue light for the router blinking and then the 2 blue lights for the telephone blinking all the time.
I don't know what could be causing this.
I know that to connect my computer to the router or for that matter any computer to the 2wire router I need to enter the serial code in the back of the rouer as the password.
I am not sure if that means that the PAP2 device needs to provide this password to connect to the router?
If this is the case how do I do that?
thanks.

This must be a $20 PAP2. If so, then expect it to become a brick and/or a nicely design door stop. Please read this to find out further.

Why not contact the folks you bought it from? :uhh:
Here's the good news: With all the blinking red and blue lights you're all set for the holidays!

Hong Kong PAP2's are notorious for either being cheap rip off copies of real PAP2s or a genuine PAP2 that has had some soldering work done inside to make it unlocked. You should always buy from a reputable US based dealer. You really have no options with an HK PAP2 that doesn't work.
I set it up with my 2wire router AT&T service. However, there is no ring tone in the phone. The first step where I need to dial **** and 110# is not working because the phone does not have a dial tone.
Does the menu voice respond when you enter ****? If so, your PAP2 may not be a total loss. If the menu voice doesn't respond, then I'm doubtful it can be salvaged.
The PAp2 device just has the red light blinking, the blue light for the router blinking and then the 2 blue lights for the telephone blinking all the time.
The red blinking light means the PAP2 is not successfully booting up when you power up the unit.
I don't know what could be causing this.
You bought a cheap ripoff copy from Hong Kong. It likely is not a genuine Linksys PAP2.
I know that to connect my computer to the router or for that matter any computer to the 2wire router I need to enter the serial code in the back of the rouer as the password.

Your PAP2 should not need anything like your routers serial number. Plug the PAP2 into the router and it should work without any further interventions.
You don't seem that experienced in this area so I'll go over the basics:
1. Make sure your PAP2 is connected to the router with a CAT5 or RJ-45 ethernet connection.
2. Try a different power supply. You may have a bad power supply that is the problem. The 5v DC adapter for the PAP2 is very commonly used by lots of products. See if you can find a different AC adapter and try it.
3. Does the voice menu respond after entering ****?
4. Can you log into the PAP2's web menu? Your router should contain the PAP2's local IP address. The 2wire router page varies from provider to provider. Find a friend who knows about these things. Here in Sacramento, most 2wire pages load from 192.168.1.254 but as I said, it can vary.
You can also try this in your web browser:
homeportal/management
and see if that brings up your 2wire router's web page. You'll need the router's serial number to log in to view things like the PAP2's local IP address.
5. After finding your PAP2's local IP address, can you login to the PAP2 via your web browser to see any error messages, etc?

I also bought mine from ebay. But the adapter was shipped from HongKong. I have no problems to configure it to use with Sipgate VOIP service.

You DID have problems!
Yes, in the end, you finally managed to get it working.
But you DID have problems!
People who read your comment without reading the associated link might get a mistaken impression that it's a wonderful idea to buy ATA's from Hong Kong on eBay.
It's not.

Re: Linksys Pap2 Hardware support
When you say you set it up, what exactly did you do ? Just plug it in ? Or you were able to get into the web settings ?
If the lights are blinking in the following pattern 3 short blinks, 2 long blinks, 3 short blinks, then there may be hope for you.
This pattern means the firmware is corrupt and the adapter is booting up with the failover firmware. This firmware is a smaller one designed only to allow flashing of the main firmware.
To recover it, you would need the PAP2 firmware recovery tool and pray that the serial number printed on the back of the unit matches the one programmed in the flash (it did not match in my case).
If the serial number is good, you just enter it in the firmware recovery tool and the tool should do the rest for you.
If the serial number is not good, then you need a hub to sniff the packets coming from the adapter. You should see some ARP requests showing the IP address of a TFTP server that the adapter is trying to contact. Then if you set up your computer with that IP address and set up a TFTP server, you will see the name of the firmware file that is looking for. Finally, take a valid PAP2 firmware, rename it to the file your adapter is looking for, and the adapter will grab it and update its firmware and then boot normally.

f117b2 didn't have a problem with his PAP2 device, except s/he didn't know how to access it. S/he tried to access the PAP2 device using an HTTPS instead of HTTP. AFAIC, that was an operator error and not a problem with the device.

Hi guy,
If your PAP2 have any problem need RMA, you would send it to your supplier. I sure they have this service. I bought one from (site name removed by a mod) and they also can exchange one for me. With 1 year warranty.

Judging by the screen captures he posted, his PAP2 has a non-genuine MAC address, and is therefore guaranteed to be a counterfeit. He is very lucky that it's working at all for him, and he'll be even luckier if it's still working 6 months from now. A large proportion of these counterfeits fail within a relatively short time. Furthermore, he cannot use his PAP2 with a provider that does secure HTTPS provisioning, as it has an invalid security certificate.

This story just sank my heart. I had some extra Vonage PAP2 (v1) that I bought, and was thinking of unloading them after I unlock them (but didn't due to lack of free time) on the market such as eBay. But I guess these fake ones are flooding the market with cheap price and I likely won't be able to compete. Not sure what is better: an unlocked Vonage, which has the risk of being able to be re-locked if not careful (reset while on internet), or a fake one that might die at any time :-) .
I guess I'll keep my stock for future projects :-).

Do as what I had done to sell my PAP2v1 devices locally. To be fair to the buyers, I always explained to them that they could always go online to purchase the same and/or better PAP2T for more or less the same price and also beware of the cheap PAP2 sold on e-bay by some people in HongKong.

Question?
For my own ignorance improvement.
Are any of the Linkysys PAP devices from Hong Kong legitimate? I have read that there are some legitimate sellers. I also heard that some of them are gray-market.

I'm sure some are.
But how can you tell?
In England, there is a big story about a research scientist who was also a call girl.

But most scientists are not call girls, and most call girls are not scientists.
Thankfully!
