Verizon begs Congress for Knicks/Rangers in HD

You guys think it's fair that CV holds back HD for the NY sports teams they own?

Right, we need Congress and the FCC meddling more in the private sector just like they've done with Government Motors and the like. They pretty much want to have it where they want to eliminate the free market. Have the big telcos and other big companies in their respective markets either it be car companies, oil or whatever else whine and throw a temper tandrum at mommy (congress) whenever they don't get their way and have them get their way no matter how much favoritism and other ways it fucks up capitalism and how we do business.
Truly sickening and pathetic, grow up and deal with it or piss off Verizon. You'd be doing the same thing if it was the other way around...crybabies.

I think congress should get involved in certain things ... namely net neutrality ... but I think the FCC should make a ruling on this FIOS/MSG-HD thing.
I really don't know if it's fair ... it's an annoyance to people that have FIOS ... but CV owns MSG. I've said before it's silly of CV to give MSG, but hold back MSG-HD ... but not illegal, and obviously smart.
It's like the NFL Sunday Ticket ... it's annoying, but there's really no complaint that holds water from anyone not from DirecTV.

I'm not against net neutrality at all, just when it applies to the feds meddling with the private sector over how one company can't handle competition and crying about it when they'd be doing the exact same thing. I'm sure they would hold out or charge high inflated user fees to the cable cos to have those channels if Verizon had them instead...which of course cable cos not being able to get them or getting them and sticking us with huge bill increases, they would get tons of new subs as a result. That would also be smart and competition. I'm not a cheerleader for CV or anything as this would apply to any company in any industry. CV just knows how to play the game and now throw out core reasons for people to cancel. It's the HD.

This is what happens when the people that own the pipe control the content. No matter if it is Verizon, Cablevision, Comcast or any other internet provider they should not be allowed to own or control the content. If Comcast is allowed to merge or buy NBC would it be ok if they held back HD programing from all other providers as a business decision? The NFL Sunday Ticket is not the same since the NFL decided to license it to one provider and is not a provider themselves. Usually do not like to see Congress or any government agency get involved in business matters but I think this is different when it is a matter of controlling both delivery and content.

Ho hum, just another carriage fight between huge corporations. I don't think Congress should be involved. But then I can't say I care all that much either.

I say let Verizon get these channels so that CV stops bragging on having all 9 local sports team in HD.

All they have to do is pay what cablevision is asking. Cablevision is providing these channels to directv because they paid what cablevision was asking.

Wow verizon is a hypocriite. They do everything in their power to stop small companies from providing fttp but want cablevision to provide them with knicks and rangers in hd.

CV isn't offering the channels to Verizon at ANY price. If you had read the article, you would've known that.

I am all for government keeping out of private matters.
However, why should the consumers have to suffer through inferior cablevision service to see sports games in HD?

I have to wonder about CV's decision, even if it turns out they're legally within their rights to make it.
While keeping MSG from Verizon might influence a few sports fanatics to change to Cablevision, it also has to greatly reduce the number of viewers watching CV's teams and broadcasts.
Wouldn't you think that less viewers would be bad for business?

They are within their legal rights. Verizon is pushing to have the law changed so that Cablevision has to sell it to them. That's why Verizon is complaining to the FCC and not suing.
Also, Cablevision owns MSG in order to boost their cable business. They didn't buy the cable business to boost MSG, so if they can maintain a competitive advantage on the cable side at the cost of a few less people watching the Knicks and Rangers then they will.

I kind of like the actress that plays the mom in the fios "tell the truth" commercial. Her interruptions and facial features are slick.
If DirecTV has it, so can Verizon. MSG's high def is worth it, if only for the picture quality and not the teams themselves.

Sure do. It's their service and they are free to do as they please. Frankly I think they are turning down a money making opportunity since there are people that will just not use Cablevision for service no matter what so they could capture some money from those people.

They're already getting $2 a sub for MSG and MSG+ from Verzion. MSG-HD and MSG+HD are throw ins, they won't generate that much extra revenue for selling them the HD versions, no more then 10 cents per sub.

I'm not in favor of government meddling with business, but I'm also wary of sleazy business tactics. Cablevision, by advertising about the extra fees that FiOS charges, are bragging about the fact that Verizon is saddled with extra government taxation, something that Cablevision and its cable breathren lobbied congress to continue implementing as the two (cable and phone companies) businesses began to compete.
Withholding HD programming of its subsidiary sports franchise holdings from its competitors and then bragging about that fact is a sleazy business tactic, and when it comes to company loyalty I'll remember this.
