Disc cloning/restoring
I wonder if anybody knows or had experience with tools allowing to easily migrate contents of one drive to another, preferably via creating an image. I want to upgrade my HDD and I want to preserve my current operating system.
There was a talk long time ago about linux dd but I don't think it is useful in drives with different sizes. Thanks in advance

The Hard Drive comes with tools to clone your old HD when you buy a retail boxed unit. Otherwise, you just download the exact same tools from the Manufacturers web site when you buy a bulk HD that are on the CD that comes in the retail box.
What brand drive are you getting?

The Seagate tools work in Vista. Can be over ridden to work on non Seagate drives. It was posted before. i did it with my Wd drives. Alt T O I think it was. (Tech Override)
The WD software didn't work under Vista
I do like the Segate software myself.

EDIT: Disc Wizard that's what it's called

You should have burned the .ISO version and booted from CD instead. Then you can Clone without the OS even being loaded. ;)

They show the download at WD as "Acronis True Image WD Edition"

It is also the very same Acronis True Image as WD rebadged as Seagate Discwizard and rebadged as Maxtor MaxBlast.

Also the free full working version of acronis migrate easy was meant for this.
I use it everytime I upgrade to a larger hard drive.

Re: Disc cloning/restoring
Although mentioned are the free utilities which would be great for 1 time use if you plan on using it in the future for backups I highly recommend Image for windows. Very lightweight and updated almost every month. Also unlike it's competitors you wont find yourself needing to spend another 30 dollars every year just to get updates they have a very generous update policy.

Acronis is not only for one time use. Including the OEM'd versions.

Your absolutely right I didn't mean it to sound that way thanks for clarifying. What I meant was if your doing frequent backups I recommend looking into other solutions that would give you support, updates, and additional features that these free versions that come with the drives wont offer. If he is only using it to migrate his drive or maybe the occasional backup then the free versions should fit his needs just fine.
