[ Billing] modem rental fee increase

Anyone else have the modem rental fee for up from $3 to $5? I just noticed this on this month's bill. An increase of 40% and I was never informed of it or why - nice. What about buying instead of leasing? Can you go to say Best Buy and buy one these (Arris 402)?

It's been on bills for some time (about the increase). With phone service, you have to keep our eMTA. Currently in most markets (none that I know of), a customer owned eMTA is not permitted. For regular internet only modems, as always you can buy your own.

There was a note in my last months bill about the modem fee increase. Two dollars more for the modem rental and 2 dollars less for the HSI fee, so it is a wash.

You were informed by mail and/or in your bill over a month ago. You just didn't read it.

I no longer have Digital Voice so it sounds like I can buy my own cable modem. Any cable modem? Any recommendations?

Since you mentioned Best Buy, this would be a good choice

D3 compatible for years of service, and breakeven is around 20 months of rental fees.
You might be able to find it cheaper at other sites. you could also look at earlier models (sb51xx series), which are getting much cheaper now (but maybe not cheap enough, to be a better value than the SB6120)
I'd avoid used (unlees a friend offers you one) and "ebay" modems, some of which are too cheap to be legit.

You can get it from Amazon for less, with free shipping and no tax:

Great modem, and like you said, compatible for years of service.
