[VA] My COX Speed is 400 KBS
I had COX preferred which is supposed to bring me 10 MBS and I was consistently getting around 300 KBS.
Now I am on COX premium which is supposed to be 20 MBS and I am getting 400-500 KBS.
I am clueless on what it is. I get this on my laptop (wireless) and my standalone. So I doubt its anything about the computer or it wouldnt effect both of them.
The router is a Lynksys WRT160N which is pretty new and has the newest firmware.
The cable modem is pretty old (maybe 5 years). But from my understanding there is really no way it can slow it down.
The only thing I can think of is that I am being limited by COX but don't see how after I got the upgrade.
Any ideas at all?

Red this post and provide the info in here in your thread. Also, please register with BBR so the Cox techs can PM with you. »[ALL] what to post before complaining about slow speeds...?

no limiting whatsoever, aside from the standard file provisioning and carrier-side qos. needforspeed59 has pointed you towards a good list of things to check. there are a multitude of things that could go wrong that would cause sub-par speeds. post results from the thread mentioned and register on dslr so we can carry on from there.

Seem you are getting your MB/s and Mb/s mixed up. You currently subscribe to 20Mbps, not 20MBps, there is a biggg difference there.
20 000 (kb / s) = 2500 KB / s
Most websites wont go up to 2500KB/s and you will only be getting 400-700KB/s, it all depends on the website. I would first goto that post and check everything. Goto a website like www.speedtest.net and see what you get there. You should be getting at LEAST 15000 Kb/s (down) over 1500 Kb/s (up). If you arent getting it, I would go directly to the modem and see what you get, if you are getting what you pay for, then there is something between the router and your computer /laptop slowing you down. Also wireless can slow speeds down to with going thru walls, floors, etc, also distance plays a big factor into quality of the wireless signal.
If all the above fails, check on the modem page (192.168.100.1). You should have between 42 to 48 Tranmit power level (perferred range) and 5 to -10 dBmV Receive Power level (again perferred range). If the transmit is above 48, then getting rid of splitters in the line will lower that number, but the receive power level will rise. Also make sure all splitters are 5-100MHz, make sure you dont have any bad wire (perferred is RG6 Quad Shield, none of that bad radio shack stuff). If nothing can be done, then a Tech Visit may be needed.

Yeah run some speedtests and if you have a router, direct connect to modem and run speedtest also.

Re: [VA] My COX Speed is 400 KBS
Well I think I narrowed it down to my modem.
I bypassed my router by connecting directly to the modem and my speeds are the same.
I tried to do some pinging and I pinged the gateway and I was getting slow speeds and a frequent timeout. But when I pinged a website like google it was just fine.
Did a little research and my modem is extremely old (10 years) and so I just ordered a new one. This has to be the issue because I tried/tested everything possible.
Thanks for your replys though.

well we want to see some speedtest results. because just dling stuff from certain sites aint gunna do you, or us any good. because it all depends on that sites server, and how fast it can supply you on the download speed. So post some speedtest results.
