Issue with WRT54GP2

My unlocked wrt54gp2 has been working without issues for 2 years with various VOIP providers. All of a sudden from yesterday, the power LED is blinking fast. I am not able to connect to the interface. My computer says limited or no connectivity. The internet and WAN LED are steadily lit. Has anyone faced this issue ? Is my router brick now ?

Re: Issue with WRT54GP2

If you figure out how to fix it, I have about 4 of them that do the same (WRT54GP2 and RT31P2 ) :)
To me it looks like it doesn't even start the boot loader, so either the flash is totally corrupt or some other hardware issue is preventing the boot.

Sure. JTAG may be a solution. But I havent looked into it.

Anybody know how to open this thing to see if any parts are blown out or something

Re: Issue with WRT54GP2

If I remember correctly the router part is based on a Marvell CPU and I haven't seen any public info about using JTAG on that CPU.
To open it, you have to pop out the blue part. This video should help:

There isn't a JTAG port on it.

These units are built pretty crappy. I had one blinking like this and thought it was corrupt. So I reprogrammed both flashes and it worked for a little bit but went back to blinking again.

Re: Issue with WRT54GP2

The rapidly blinking power LED indicates that the device is in its bootloader's failsafe mode, awaiting a TFTP firmware upgrade. This is the result of the main firmware image in flash being corrupt or missing--probably the result of a failed/interrupted firmware upgrade. You need to upgrade the router side's firmware using Linksys' own TFTP client. Standard TFTP clients will not work. Linksys' TFTP client used to be available from their FTP site. However, since Cisco's reorganization of Linksys, it seems that this site is no longer up.

Re: Issue with WRT54GP2

I have a few of them with the power led blinking rapidly at a steady interval and they are not in fail safe mode. I have never been able to recover any of these.
I also had a couple of them with corrupt firmware and the power light was blinking but in a pattern. Can't remember the exact pattern, but there were definitely some "long blinks" and some "short blinks" (possibly similar to the pattern of PAP2 adapters that are in failsafe mode). Those I was able to recover with TFTP.

Re: Issue with WRT54GP2

I have tftp software from linksys site. But I cant connect to the router. It is not giving out IP ( connecting directly from LAN to computer results in limited connectivity) nor accepting IPs (connect to another router's LAN to WAN). I tried static IP of 192.168.15.X range (Failsafe default 192.168.15.1), nothing happens. Wireshark reports no activity from the router.

I could not fix the ones with rapidly blinking power LED.
For the ones where the LED was blinking in a pattern, I think I Linksys TFTP tool to push the firmware file. I don't remember if the router's IP address in safe mode was 192.168.15.1 or 192.168.1.1 but you can try both.

Re: Issue with WRT54GP2

i think you need to configure your laptop with fixed ip and then force tftp to the router (assuming they are on same subnet)

As hoolahoous said setup your computer with 192.168.15.2 fixed ip address and use tftp with 192.168.15.1
If the router is not totally dead will take it.
