[ Billing] Multiple IP's, Residential?

I've looked around a bit and I can't seem to find an answer specifically for res accounts...can I get multiple IP's with Comcast?

Yes, at additional cost that varies by market.

in order to recieve multiple ip's you will have to pay for a buisness package which costs more and than will have to pay more for additional ip's.

Yep, last I checked it was $5/month for up to 4 IPs. Be aware that for residential accounts, the IPs will be dynamic.

You'll have to call Comcast to ad the service.

Install tech

You should stick to installs and not sales. Residential users can get multiple dynamic IP's without having to convert to business.

Here is one person that did.

To do this I'm guessing you need to have a setup such as this....

Cable Modem >> Switch >> Routers 1 & 2 (Each pulling a different dynamic WAN IP) ?

I'd be interested in doing this too...

Exactly what you need. Because they are dynamic you cannot get two IP's on the same NIC.

Re: [ Billing] Multiple IP's, Residential?

No... not "exactly"... the cable modem's DHCP server simply will be told to allow two (2) public dynamic IP addresses as requested by any device requesting one without the need of a router... you just need a switch or hub for the ability to have more than device pulling from the cable modem at one time.

Some markets will sell IPs single while others will sell you a 5 pack for about $14.95... but, if you're going to put a router behind the modem anyway, why would anyone really want 2 public dynamic IP addresses?

Theres lots of reasons

port forwarding only works if you haven't already forwarded that port to somewhere else

I'd imagine if you sat down and considered most real world scenarios, especially in the context of a residential connection, there probably aren't a lot of cases that truly need multiple IP addresses. I think in most cases, and its a valid case, its more for the ease of configuration.

Really, I didn't know that the cable modem handed out the public IP's? I thought the cable was told by the config file to allow spcified number of mac addresses to obtain the public IP from the back end. I htought the only IP's that were handed out by the cable modem were private IP's in the case that there was no connection to the cable system.

In the case of two different routers, maybe they want two seperate network for some reason. Or that two routers was just an example and one would be for a router and the other for a VoIP ATA or something.

Re: [ Billing] Multiple IP's, Residential?

Ya I can see in 95%+ real world residential scenarios more than 1 public IP isn't needed

but if your using a non-UPnP router (or disable UPnP for security) and you have more than 1 Xbox

there are lots or odd reasons but most of them are not due to absolute need but rather ease of configuration

How many IP addresses do I receive with the Comcast High-Speed Internet Service?
Comcast provides and authorizes 1 dynamically assigned IP address per residential High-Speed Internet account. You have the option of purchasing up to 4 additional IP addresses, for a total of 5 dynamic IP addresses. Please contact us for additional details.

Yes, they do that crap all the time. Multiple IPs are an unusual request, you'll have to keep trying until you get a competent rep.

Or post a request here: »/forum/comcastdirect

Re: [ Billing] Multiple IP's, Residential?

Too bad they are not like WideOpenWest Cable and allow 3 dynamic IPs on residential as part of the package. Back then I often put my VoIP device on its own IP.

In general though, most of the need for multiple IPs are more likely business oriented purposes.

Ok, I always thought that the cable modem only allowed a certain number of mac address to be attached and go out to obtain the public IP address. Did not realize that each modem had a dhcp server with a bunch of public IP's attached to its pool to hand out only a local private IP range for when the modem is offline of the cable system.

EG @ 10th Nov 07:08PM:
Re: [ Billing] Multiple IP's, Residential?

It is my understanding that the modem merely acts as a layer 2 bridge to CC's DHCP server which is what issues the WAN (public) IP addys..

The config file tells the CMTS and the system to only allow the amount of addys it is configured for.

I believe that the modem's built in DHCP server only gets enabled when it is not in sync mode (no connection to the ISP). If that occurs, it only hands out private (non routable) IP addys to the LAN side. I've always found that to be a bit of a useless feature.. BTW, this is not a feature (the built in DHCP server) of every single make/model number out there. I know that the Moto Surfboards have that function.

Re: [ Billing] Multiple IP's, Residential?

According to Moto (and a somewhat unclear reference at ComCast) the MOTO's can in fact, act as a local DHCP server ("up to 63 users... with addtional equipment, not provided" (switch???)while online) However I believe CC ONLY allows moto's in bridge mode with additional persistant dynamic IP's available (in some areas) for an extra charge.
For Static IP's you must use their (somewhat sucky (at least the 8014) SMC's.

I don't have more than 1 but if you have upnp disabled (ie not available) thenyou won't know what random port the 2nd will use and then you'd be stuck with one having a good open nat connection and the other not

Re: [ Billing] Multiple IP's, Residential?

Here is my deal
I do have 2 XBOX's and recently tried to set them up so me and my buddy can play Forza.
Here is the scenario.
I have a Comcast DHG-535-2 modem and connected to it a Linksys WRT310N.

I have XBOX1 setup to port forwarding with the ports 53, 88 and 3074 open.
The 2nd xbox i have added to the DMZ so it will open up all ports.
THis still does not eniterly work.
I called Comcast to see if they allow for multiple residential IP addresses and they told me the only way is to charge me for another service and give me a 2n modem (another $45/.month)
Does anyone have an ideas of how to get 2 ips, so i can have both xboxs working on different connection so i dont run into any nat issues.. thank you

I don't think that is correct. The SMC's have been used for the Business Class services with true static IP's. The standard residential modems can do the typical residential multiple IP's, remember we are talking about multiple residential dynamic IP's not static/sicky IP's, as they just send a config file authorizing the number of MAC addresses for the modem to allow.

I have 4 XBox 360s that game at the same time with no issues.
All connected via ethernet.

I have 1 IP through a WRT610N router with stock settings.
No port forwarding.
Nothing in DMZ

Sounds strange that you'd have to reboot the cable modem each time, does the ambit show you the config file that's being downloaded? I'd have them double check that they actually are sending you the correct config file.
