Microsoft Security Essentials Rated Advanced+ in Lab, As Best Free AntiVirus in Windows:
AV-Comparatives has released its Oct 2009 removal comparative report, in which Microsoft Security Essentials was rated as Advanced+, among with other big names like eScan and Symantec. It actually beats all other AntiVirus Freeware out there, including AVG and Avast, as one of the winners in malware removal category.

I still like the ability to run a boot scan with Avast. I'm pretty sure the MSE doesn't have that capability or does it?

Based on your past performance of omitting information and adding inaccurate observations I need to verify claims independently. I can't find where AV comparatives said MSE is "best free antivirus in Windows". The report covers removal only, not detection. Perhaps you can point me to that statement on the avcomparative.com site?

This tests focuses only on the malware removal/cleaning capabilities, therefore all used samples were samples that the tested Anti-Virus products were able to detect. It has nothing to do with detection rates or protection capabilities. Of course, if an Anti-Virus is not able to detect the malware, it is also not able to remove it.

The main question was if the products are able to successfully remove malware from an already infected/compromised system. The test report is aimed to normal/typical home users and not Administrators or advanced users that may have the knowledge for advanced/manual malware removal/repair procedures. A further question was if the products are able to remove what they are able to detect.

The latest detection findings(August 2009 report) puts OneCare, the "for pay" predecessor and foundation for MSE, near the bottom - at 90% detection with G Data and Avira at the top with 99.8 and 99.4%.

I will say in MSE's defense that Symantec's detection has been OK, but removal has been unsatisfactory in my experience, and MSE has performed well on the systems on which I have it installed. Symantec did recently fail to detect some of my old lab rat hacker tools, while MSE detected and quarantined them. Amazingly, Symantec CE 10.5 detected hackerdefender but left it alone on a system I encountered a couple years back.

Based on recent focus on the product and the hiring of good people like ahulett in the malware area, I expect MSE to improve in detection rates. I'm now to the point where I'm inclined to recommend MSE and Forefront with Windows firewall over "suites" like McAfee and Symantec/Norton. The MS products run well, don't turn the system into a boat anchor when doing scheduled scans, and I can manage them with active directory, something I haven't been able to do with Norton/Symantec.

Perhaps he just forgot to add "at detection rates" as the article states or, more likely, decided to extrapolate removal rates to be interpreted as "best free AV ... ";)

I'm not here to bash the product. As my other posts on MSE indicate, I like MSE myself. I do, however, feel that product pumpers should make some attempt to provide more complete and accurate information to users who may be misled by such promotion.

I like MSE for no annoying pop ups "OMG! I just updated! Hope I'm not obscuring your full screen video!" and no up-sell ads "OMG! You're not fully protected! Buy Now!"

The good detection and removal is also nice.

Regardless of what the OP said or didn't say, there is a link posted so everyone can see for themselves. Anyhow, I think this bodes well for MSE. I'm not totally convinced to switch to it quite yet, but it's definitely on my radar and a few more good results such as these will be enough to sway me to using it full time. Again, I know this was only for removal & cleaning capabilities, but Kudos to MSE.

While i tried Microsoft Security Essentials from Beta to FInal, started having issue with the final release, from slower boot up to programs with files taking longer to transfer over the network on such, so switched back to Avast 4 for the time being, but Microsoft Security Essentials is still on my radar in possibly switching to use full time on the PC's in my household, but not totally convinced as yet on the switching full time part

I'll list the issue i had so folks know

starting with number one, which was slower bootup, and printer software (HP Solution Center) taking like 1-3 minutes to fully load up

Network transfers taking much longer, guess since it had to scan the files

and at times lag while using Second Life

But Overall it seemed to work fine and update fine, except the virus scans(full scans) did take a long long while

But still keeping this program on my watch list

I had the same issue of slow boot up times. I was actually running MSE along side Avast AV with both running real time protection. Not a single conflict that I could detect. Other than the slow boot time, it ran great.

I have since taken it back off my system, and just using Avast. I liked the simplicity of MSE.
