replaced modem, problem persists
I posted a little while back asking about problems with Cox service in Mesa. At the time I was seeing periods of "dead" where all lights were on but the internet was essentially dead. I was advised by Cox to replace my old modem. I asked here and got the same advice. So I replaced the modem.
I now have a Motorola SB6120, and when the network is operating it is very, very fast. Unfortunately, every day now, sometimes multiple times a day, the network just grinds to a halt. I don't understand at all.
Email seems unaffected.
Instant messaging seems unaffected (MS Messenger)
Web pages stall, servers cannot be found, page load errors, web pages load in dribs and drabs. --- this has got to be a clue.
I noticed that using DSL Reports speed test, when the network is "good" my download speed from San Fran is about 12.6Mb/s and upload speed is about 2-5Mb/s. When the network is clogged, the download speed is usually unaffected, but the upload speed drops to 1kb/s-20kb/s. This may be another clue?
I've had Cox out to the house and they replaced a splitter on the outside. They also recommended I run the cable directly to the modem rather than go through a splitter inside the house - I've done this. Cox also said they upgraded the firmware in my modem, but that doesn't seem to have changed things.
I've also tried a different router - no difference.
I used to get this speed issue once in a blue moon and just called Cox. They'd tell me nothing was wrong but within a few minutes of me calling, everything would be okay again.
This time I'm seeing the problem every day now, sometimes multiple times per day.
Suggestions?

Re: replaced modem, problem persists
I changed the DNS servers to 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2 - it seemed to make a difference at first but now I'm not so sure. Maybe I didn't do it right? (I logged into my router and clicked on static DNS and entered the two servers).
Also, I see that my SB6120 "Link" LED is blinking steadily, rhythmically rather than with the data flow. Previously I thought this LED was almost on steadily???
