U-verse installation questions
How is the U-verse residential gateway (RG) connected to the network interface device (NID)? Is it by CAT5, coax, and/or can it reuse the existing telephone wiring like ADSL?
I just bought a new house (my first) so I'm feeling a little apprehensive about someone drilling holes through the exterior walls. Unless the RG can reuse existing telephone wiring, I guess I have no choice do I? If it makes any difference, I'm only interested in getting the Internet and possibly the VOIP service; no TV.

Re: U-verse installation questions
Typically they use Cat3/5 or coax. If the existing line from the NID is in good condition they can use it. No way to know till the installer shows up and tries.

Yes.
To elaborate, all three can be used. If CAT5 is run, only one pair is used to carry the VDSL signal. Other pairs can be used to carry analog phone back to your NID/distribution point to use the existing house wiring for voice.
Coax can be used, but if you're not subscribing to Uverse TV, they probably won't use it since you'll likely be using it for your other video service.

The house was built at the end of 2007 so the wiring should be brand new. I can't vouch for the wiring installers though :)
Does the installer typically test the existing wiring first or would I need to intervene from the get-go and insist they try to reuse existing wiring?

No they should try to use the existing wiring first. Just let the installer know what you want exactly.

Thanks, one more question. How much is installation running these days?

I'm not sure if you get two services if they will charge. Last I heard it was $149 but what some have done is order TV to avoid it and cancel the tv in 30 days.

I already had a 3-twisted-pair cable that I had put in for a home run with DSL. The installer just used that (only one pair was in use). He use the additional 2-pair to connect the U-verse voice back from the RG to the house analog phone lines.
