[CA] Need help with some connection problems
For the past few days, I have been having some connection problems. I am not able to connect to a lot of websites. E.g.: I can connect to cnn but not to bbc or fox news. I can connect to Google, but cannot do the msn live search from the tool bar. I also have problems with some xbox live services.
When I try to connect to those sites, the status bar on IE says "waiting for »" and after some time I get the "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" error.
I get the same error on three different computers. I tried connecting directly to the modem and got the same result. I shutdown my firewall just to make sure, but it's a no-go.
Cox is sending a technician to replace the modem, but I think the problem lies elsewhere, like on a DNS server somewhere.
Can anyone help?

You can change DNS to see if it resolves the problem.
I use OpenDNS Servers... »www.opendns.com/
Other ones are also 4.2.2.1
and 4.2.2.2

Thanks, I'll look into it. I did go to openDNS and FreeDNS earlier and was too lazy to register :-) Will let you know if it works.

opendns you don't have to register unless you want to have control of blocking certain websites and such for kids. The 4.2.2.1/4.2.2.2/4.2.2.3 are also very good dns servers, and don't require any registering.

Re: [CA] Need help with some connection problems
You guys are awesome. I used 4.2.2.1 and it is working. Took me some time to figure out where to put it in since I had flashed my router to tomato. I'll call cox and ask them not to send the technician.

Yeah cox is known to have dns server problems, and alot of us use either 4.2.2.?'s as are dns or opendns, and they work great.

Re: [CA] Need help with some connection problems
Called Cox to report the problem and got into an argument with the technician who said there was no way I could change my DNS settings. He started talking and was mixing up DHCP and DNS. I told him not to worry about it anymore. I miss the old Cox support.

Re: [CA] Need help with some connection problems
For what it's worth there doesn't appear to be any issues with DNS but we are investigating the possibility of some kind of routing issue.

CoxTech1, well i know alot of us have faced problems with pages loading slow, and some not even loading. With using these other dns servers these problems haven't occured. So something is not right.

Re: [CA] Need help with some connection problems
Different DNS servers are accessed via different routes which would explain why changing DNS servers is getting results however, it isn't addressing the root issue.

Coxtech1,
Just venting here. I called to inform Cox of a potential problem and the technician started off with his script. I don't need to go through all that stuff about rebooting computer, router, disconnecting router and all that stuff just to report the problem I had already fixed.
And please get rid of that annoying automated system. I'd rather listen to elevator music :-)

Re: [CA] Need help with some connection problems
Funnily though, the problems appeared when the switch to non-latin web addressing was announced.

Re: [CA] Need help with some connection problems
Don't forget that often larger sites will have multiple locations that their site is served from. Depending on where your DNS is geographical located it will change how you actually get to the site. This will of course give a perception that it is a DNS issue when in fact it is a routing issue.

I agree. I noticed that most of the sites I could not reach were served by Akamai, except for www.nytimes.com

Your info might say that there are no DNS issues, but the San Diego system status page indicated this morning that there are DNS problems in the San Diego area and some web sites might not load.

Yes, we don't have an outage category for what we are investigating the issue as.

Re: [CA] Need help with some connection problems
CoxTech1 is correct "DNS Issues" is the closest thing we have for a outage category. I hate using it because it throws a lot of confusion about the actual outage but it's not actually a DNS outage.
