forward to number that does not connect

i have helped a few people get going with google voice lately. no one likes the caller presentation. the problem of course is that so many of the VOIP services used for inbound do not have an option to completely turn off voicemail. this includes skype, yahoo voice and most prepaid cell options. but just about everything has call forwarding.

does anyone know a US phone number that can be used in conditional call forwarding or no answer call forwarding that will just ring, produce a busy signal or in some other way not create a connection that will indicate to GV that the call has been answered? this way the other phones will keep ringing and voice mail will always be in GV.

You could setup and open source PBX, buy a number, and have that number in the PBX handle the call.

Are you just trying to use GV as a voicemail box? If so, just don't set any numbers in the interface. That will eliminate the problem.

these people want to use GV to be an inbound houseline, voice mail and also ring their cell phones. in most cases at least one of the destination numbers can not completely turn off voicemail. but there is a possibility to forward to another number in place of voicemail. this is the case with majicjack, skypein, yahoo voice and it seems most of the free or cheap VOIP services as well as most prepaid cell phone offerings. i am wondering if there is a known US phone number that would for example just produce a busy signal with actually answering the call. that way forwarding could be set to go there on no answer and all calls would go to GV voicemail. i have tried forwarding back to GV but that can result in calls go much too quick to the GV voicemail, especially if the cell phone is turned off or the VOIP line not functioning for some reason.

So a send busy after XX unanswered rings?

VOIPo can send to busy certain, or all numbers. Just not after XX rings. The "local forward" number can likely do that (Just turn on DND even.)

I only have the full Residential, so I cannot test that.

Re: forward to number that does not connect

Try this: Get an ipkall number and a voxalot account, forward ipkall to voxalot and disable the voicemail on voxalot. It should keep ringing until GV picks up. Of course you will need to install a softphone so you can activate the number on GV and use it every once in a while so ipkall doesn't recycle it.

I found this out a few months ago when I was using x-lite for incoming calls. When it was off, the calls would still ring to my cellphone until i answered or GV voicemail got it.

Edit: I just tried it and it still works for me.

Not knocking anyone here, but when more pieces are added to the mix the solution can be more prone to failures.

I personally wouldn't use free providers in a "production" environment, Google included.

Also, when these things stop working out-of-the-blue (and they do) there is little recourse.

But, to each their own...

i understand what you are saying. this is not a business solution. the people for whom it really matters have the direct cell phone numbers. this is really about the excitement of a 'free phone line.' the alternative of this is not a paid service but nothing at all except the existing cell phones and landlines. sure there will be some savings from fewer cell minutes but i really doubt any of the people i would be helping with this would go for a paid VOIP option; but they do find the idea of a free phone kind of exciting and this may get them to consider in the future a paid service from a small operator as opposed to only the biggest and widely advertised operations. that i believe is a good thing.

Yes it is. After using it free for a while they might switch to a paid provider for better quality and reliability. That is how it happened with me, I'm sure many others have also moved to paid service after trying out the free solutions.
