CV Salesman deals.....

I have FIOS Double Play (20/5+Phone, no TV) for $64.99/mo which is around $77 with all the taxes etc.
It was a 2-year deal which is expiring, and the new deal is $79.99, which will probably be around $95 with taxes. I use a antenna for OTA DT reception, which can be not-so great at times.

I had a CV salesman stop by (cold call). He offered 20/5 internet, phone and family TV with 3 boxes/remotes for $86 and change/mo, with a 2 year price lock. Could a offer like this be legit?

One of the reasons I dropped CV/OOL was lousy peak internet performance (oversold nodes). CV guy said that the corrected the problems in my area, and everything
-should- work fine.

I'm thinking of giving CV another shot. After being unemployed for a few months this year, and the new job pays a bit less, I'm fairly value conscious, but really like the reliability of the Fios broadband. The CV offer is good to the end of the month, as per the salesman. Think it's worth a look?

Unless the internet speeds are a typo/misremembering, the speeds offered are 15/2 or 30/5 (boost). If the sales person is positive it's 20/5, I'd ask for the deal in writing. Otherwise, that's a very good deal, as it's lower than the regular triple-play deal (is there a visa gift-card refund that he's factoring into the monthly price)?

The salesman is either a buffoon who should have never made it through basic sales training, or a fraud that needs to be fired.

There is no 20/5 tier, and it's completely unlikely there'll be one. Ask him for 30/5 (Boost) service in writing, lets see if he "suddenly" remembers the specs of the services he's supposed to sell.

To be fair, he might have said 15/2 with a upgrade. I might have gotten the Fios 20/5 stuck in my head. I have his card, so any details, if I decide, will definitely be worked out.

it could be either a good deal or a bad deal depending on what exactly he offered.

ANYTHING a salesman promises you that is outside the standard offerings, do not believe him until you have it in writing.

Yeah, I won't agree to anything unless it's in writing. I dealt with CV for years and know most of the kooky stuff they try and pull. (Like it's MY computer that's screwing up the speeds, but only from 6pm-midnight).

To be honest, I have no love for either Verizon or Cablevision, but just want the best overall deal, and CV seems more inclined to yield than VZ at this time. Fios is hard to beat for internet reliability though.

Even my DSL is more reliable than CV. My DSL has been up continuously for 5 years. CV has an outage every few weeks.

I can't remember the last "CV" outage I've had, OOL or TV.

The last time I had a CV-caused outage was probably around 4-6 years ago. My most recent outage was due to a weathered/corroded filter on the tap. It was replaced within a couple days.

When I had Verizon DSL, it was out whenever the wind blew the wrong way. If it was raining, we had to forget about doing anything on the internet. Verizon's solution was "can you restart your modem?". The times that fixed the problem: zero.

When I had CV, there was an outage an average of every 6 weeks. I figure there were three reasons:

1. Any significant work in the area, e.g., work on a node, results in an entire area being taken offline, since everyone shares the same cables. (DSL has a dedicated pair from the CO, so work on someone else's service doesn't affect mine.)

2. The cables from the head-end are 15 miles long and above ground, so that any tree limb that falls or cars that crash into the poles can cause a widespread outage. (My phone cables for DSL are only 1 mile long and are underground, so trees and cars aren't going to take them down.)

3. CV used to have dead batteries, so a power failure would kill the service. I think they've largely solved that problem. (DSL's power comes from the CO, so it's not affected by power failures.)

Regardless, I'll take whichever service is cheaper. If CV still charged $29.95, I'd still be an OOL customer. But they don't, and I'm not.

This is approximately the deal I got recently - except even cheaper because I only wanted one DVR box. (And it's 30/5, not 20/5). I also had Fios internet+phone, but oddly they wanted a copy of my Dish Network bill in order to give me this deal.

But do be careful: the sales person promised me a battery for my cable modem, which never materialized. If you can't get everything in writing, be prepared to fight and threaten to switch back if they don't live up to their side of the bargain.

Also, I had tremendous problems with internet service becoming unusable during peak periods; it took a few days, several tech visits, and complaining on the OOL direct forum to get these problems largely resolved (but not completely - still slow upload speeds 3 weeks later).
