Sound Problems - Driver help? (Shuttle SN68SG2)
I have an Shuttle SN68SG2 with 2 gigs of ram and a 45W processor.
It is running Windows XP Home, SP3.
The problem I had originally had was that there was no sound.
No amount of settings would resolve the problem, so I uninstalled the driver.
Reinstalled the driver using the driver from here:

No go.
After driver installation, I am getting a message that says a an unknown PCI device has been found. I am not able to get any driver to install for this device. I have tried Windows Update, pointing the installer at the Shuttle driver disc, and rubbing Budda's belly.
I have also tried reinstalling the Nforce Drivers and Audio driver from the driver disc.
Finally, I tried a newer driver (2.X something) from Realtek itself.
At this point I wondered if it was a hardware problem.
I installed a beta version of Win7 on a spare HD. With Win7, the sound works fine.

Since it works with Win7, there wouldn't appear to be a hardware problem.
So we'll move this to the MS forum and see if there's help to be found there.

In the Device Manager can you double-click the "unknown PCI device" > Details, then select "Hardware Ids"
What information is given?

Yes, that is it.
From the hardware id's the device appears to be "Microsoft UAA Bus Driver for High Definition Audio".
This is referenced in the following MS KB article:

However this fix was included in XP SP3.
Can you uninstall any sound drivers from the system and after restarting the computer can you uninstall the "unknown PCI device" via the Device Manager.
Restart the computer and see if Windows can properly detect the device.

I am guessing that windows did not properly detect the device, because the driver search didn't work correctly (it is still prompting me to supply a disc.)

You did try the "audio" drivers from here?:

Also, when did the "no sound" problem start?
Would it be practical to consider using "System Restore" using a restore point prior to losing sound?

The no sound problem started about 1.5 months ago.
I just haven't got around to fixing it.
I have tried that driver.
No love.
I will look and see if I have a restore point.
I am not sure when the problem started, so it may be tough to pick.
What about reinstalling SP3?

Reinstalling SP3 may be a possibility.
Also, check that the "Windows Audio" service is set to "Automatic" and is "Started".
Also, check the Event Viewer logs for any related warnings or errors related to audio.

How did you install SP3, integrated or on top of SP1 or SP2? You should have:
C:\Windows\inf\hdaudbus.inf
C:\Windows\system32\drivers\hdaudbus.sys
If not, you can actually take the KB888111 hotfix for XP SP2, extract it with /x (ex. KB888111.exe /x), and point Device Manager to where hdaudbus.inf/sys are (I done this before w/ beta SP3 before they decided to include the UUA driver, ).
Or you can take the files from the XP SP3 full installer, extract it with /x, and place those files where they need to be.
So you don't have to reinstall SP3.

I made a shortcut and then changed the link to include the /x argument.

I took the files from the kb hotfix, pointed device manager at them, then the windows hd audio driver installed.
Following this, I re-installed the (previously uninstalled during troubleshooting) realtek driver.
I now have sound.

SP3 should already have had the driver, though. I always use integrated ISOs and do a clean install to update to a new service pack, and haven't had the issue w/ the HD Audio driver. Maybe you used the express install and it cut corners to save on download size, and didn't download the HD Audio driver. hdaudbus.sys/hdaudbus.inf are always present even on configurations that don't need that particular driver, and if it is needed it'd install it automatically during setup (with SP3 integrated).
