Okay I've sign up but it looks like I still have to wait...maybe a few days? How long did you wait till you got your account details?

Aren't there privacy issues for human voice transcription?

Re: GV has competition

I don't have a cell phone. 1) Can I use Rabbit as an outgoing sip service using a Callcentric ID without cost. 2) Can I have Rabbit calls to my Callcentric # ring my GV # and avoid Callcentric charges.

If that is not doable can I use my girlfriend's cell ID to at least make free outgoing sip calls without charges.

they do appear to allow incoming SIP connections. if your girlfriends cell is set up as one of the device in ribbit than yes you can make outbound calls from a SIP device with that number as caller ID. you can also get a new 'ribbit number' and answer calls to that number on your SIP device free or answer on any phone, gtalk, msn, or skype.

EDIT:

i meant to say above 'they do NOT appear to allow incoming SIP connections.' but you can answer incoming calls on a SIP device.

i might be a bit old fashioned. but with all the data mining and social networking focused on relationships I really like an somewhat anonymous internet that has a focus more on sharing information than personalities. this thinking leads me to never register on forums, blogs, etc unless there is no other way to post.

i am not going out of my way to hide my tracks. its just that i believe in a style of communications where a bunch of people share information in an informal/non personal manor. when i started out on AE lines, RCP/M and other BBS's in the early/mid 80's everyone used handles and no one know much about the actual identity of the other forum members. i guess i kind of mis those days a bit. but what i really dislike is the modern social networks like facebook that revolve around personal relationships predominantly. it is not that i dislike those relationships but i believe in keeping them exactly that. IN PERSON RELATIONSHIP's. i do not need computers for that sort of thing. this has pretty much put me in favor of not formally registering on forums or blog comments if not required. i just like it the more casual way of non registered contribution.

Tom regarding the free plans, does forwarding cell calls to a land line avoid cell phone charges? Do outbound sip calls avoid cell charges? Does rabbit charge for a new "ribbit number"?

Thanks

Use multiple email accounts and multiple user names if you have a privacy concern. On the internet, you can be as many "persons" as you want to be, as long as you can keep them straight.

most likely your cell provider will charge airtime for the call forwarding. but check with your carrier to be sure.

the ribbit beta accounts are free now will be $30.00 month after beta. the free 'out of beta service' seems to be strictly a voicemail thing. for now you can get free ribbit numbers, it seems like you can get as many as you want. you can call out for free from a flash phone in your web browser or any SIP device. you can set your caller ID to one of your ribbit numbers or any connected number such as your cell phone.

i am currently out of invites but will if i can get one back from someone i invited and help out some of you who want accounts. everyone gets to invite 10 others.

Yup. I re-apply for another account a couple of days ago and let's see when will I be able to get the beta account.

i was talking about RM not GV!

Sorry for the confusion. Sounded like GV. I signed up and received notification two days later.

For others to see what a notification looks like:

"Thanks for your interest in Ribbit Mobile. You've successfully reserved a spot in our exclusive beta program. Soon, you'll be able to experience a brand new way to manage your calls, messages, and phones.

We'll be sending your account confirmation soon - in the meantime, we invite you to share your ideas on our idea wall. Let us know how we can help you stay connected to the people and information that matters to you. Our developer community is hard at work building new apps, and you can participate in changing the future of communication!

Check out our blog, and invite your friends to sign up, too - the beta program is free, but it won't last forever!

We'll be in touch soon.

Sincerely,

The Ribbit Mobile Team"

Re: GV has competition

I'm trying to get my Sunrocket AC-211SR ATA to work with my Ribbit ph # so I can call out and take calls with Ribbitmobile. I used my Ribbit ph # and the username and proxy address I received when I added the sip device to my list of phones. However, I'm not registering and wonder if I need an IP address or different dial plan, etc.

One way that comes to mind is highly targeted ads based on the transcription of the voice mail. You login in to hear the message, it's about groceries, see an ad for a local grocery store.
If that is the case I would hate to think what ads they would show. I think their transcription has quite a ways to go to be accurate enough.
