New Service Equipment Inquiry

I just signed up a friend to Comcast HSI through comcastoffers.com and they offered a free after rebate Motorola SBG900 Wireless Cable Modem. I am not familiar with this particular device and would like to know if I should use it as a Wi-Fi device or go with a separate Router. Also, I would appreciate any first hand knowledge as to its performance and reliability. Any links to sites with info on this device would be helpful.

Thanks

I would go with a separate router and separate modem.

Things are easier when it comes time to troubleshoot stuff. If one thing goes kaput you don't lose the whole shebang. These combo gateway devices seem to be a bit of a compromise in quality of separate devices. You can upgrade the router's firmware without having to rely on your ISP to do it. You don't get made a prisoner of the ISP's typically crippled router firmware load. Mixing and matching can often result in better overall performance. Etc.

That makes sense...

Considering that it is free (after rebate) I need to give it a try, unless of course it has a bad reputation.
