HD On Demand?

This is something that I've been wondering about for a while now, but never said anything about.

How come there are no HD TV shows in VOD? There are HD movies, but no TV shows.

Re: HD On Demand?

There aren't on any providers... My guess is the amount of bandwidth and space required.

Yeah, bandwidth would be my guess. I would imagine that the 1HD/3SD or 2/2 restrictions would still apply to VOD.

Outside of that, there is the network side bandwidth... My understanding is that most channels are Multicast (? think that's the term) where as VOD would not be. It's more of a data service... there may be some issues there. Just a guess, I am not sure.

yes, VOD does count toward your 1/3 or 2/2. the reason we do not have any shows in VOD in HD is because the content provider does not provide us with HD content for VOD puroposes.

Very strange how networks don't even provide it... especially since they give it to other providers.

They may have possible contracts with other providers and those contracts prohibit them from allowing Uverse to show any HD shows on demand. I'm probably wrong, but it'd seem logical.

Re: HD On Demand?

Isn't there another quirk in the HD offerings and cost model ...

I thought that I saw somewhere that Pay Per View events, presented in HD, don't require subscription to the HD option?

This is one of those areas where U-verse is really missing the boat. Since it's IPTV, U-verse's greatest strength could be its VOD capabilities. But their library is really weak.

I must say though, they have far more programming than Comcast in the area I watch most, Food Network.

Comcast combines Food Network and FLN, and doesn't have any programs I'm interested in (I want my Good Eats!).

Now all I need is Good Eats HD.
