[Internet] Bell: Weird speed issues

I had optimax 10 for a while now with a real speed of 8Mbps (clocked on speedtest.com). My problems started recently when I switched my phone line to voip.ms.
My dsl hasn't been affected because it was already on fiber/dry loop BUT... my profile was "by mistake" changed to 3Mbps. I called and it was rectified but here is the kicker:
I reset my modem, test my speed on speedtest.com same server as usual...result: 8Mbps... test again after2-3mns and i'm down to 5Mbps.
Reset modem again...back to 8Mbps...2-3mns later down to 5mbps...
It can be reproduced none stop... DPI in action? Wth is going on? Is this a bell tactique to "punish" people from dropping their crappy expensive phone service?

First off the fiber bell uses in meaningless. It's copper. Not fiber to your home.

Second, it appears they took you off of 8-meg.

3rd, you should be demanding a credit since you don't have what you are paying for anymore.

4th, post in the direct forum with all the above, or Email kevin.crull@bell.ca with the above and ask why it happened and when it will be rectified.

Bell's throttle control wouldn't behave like this, though try testing it during the weekday (this is when Bell isn't manipulating traffic flow).
Bad line, bad modem, take your pick. Something is interfering with the signal and to compensate your speed profile is being lowered.

Because Bell uses the "UP TO" clause, they could offer you sub dial-up speeds and get away with it. Try the direct forum if you are tired of holding in the 310-Surf cue.

(Takes about a day or so for the direct people to respond.)

Re: [Internet] Bell: Weird speed issues

But can the speed profile be automatically/dynamically lowered? I always was able to max my internet 10mbps using newsgroup for weeks now... the line can't suddently become bad!!! I tried with two different modems (Speedstream 6520 and the 2wire one) with the same result.
Reset-> back to 8Mbs-> 2mns later-> back to 4-5 Mbps.
Logging to the modem to check line stats shows no errors on the line and it's synced at 10266/766

If it changed the sync rate would also change, if you modem is reporting a steady sync rate it appears the line is ok.

1. But can the speed profile be automatically/dynamically lowered? I always was able to max my internet 10mbps using newsgroup for weeks now...

2. the line can't suddently become bad!!!

3. I tried with two different modems (Speedstream 6520 and the 2wire one) with the same result.

4. Reset-> back to 8Mbs-> 2mns later-> back to 4-5 Mbps.

1. Well it can be, sync rates can drop on problem lines. We have seen this in the forum where the modem sync at whatever it can. Not saying this is the problem, just saying yes it can.

2. Yes, it can. This is shown time after time in this forum on a problem line. Not saying this is the problem, just saying yes it can.

3. If both modems produce the same result, then it's not modem related. This should be told in the direct forum since it is important to note this because this is normally bell's first line of testing, sending out a different modem to try.

4. Have you kept an eye on your stats? Watched how the SNR changed? Watched how occupancy changed? On problems lines these will fluctuate (in some cases even attenuation will change).

Hard to tell what it is with so little info. and no recording of stats over time.

If you look through this forum you will see the 2wire stats to paste (or ask and we'll show you the relevant stats). When you can do paste them. In your own notes on your end, make a notepad file (or similar) and paste the stats there every now and then to see how they change). If there is a line problem these stats will show it.

Also be aware bell has a materiel defect in service in some area's which they are not telling anyone about or putting up on their website @ »internet.bell.ca/index.cfm?metho···ceStatus (Ask the direct forum if you are in one of these area's. This is confirmed BTW, refer to: »Re: My Ordeal with Bell ). Is this your case (area) or a reflection of the defect? Who knows. Don't know if you are in this area.

No info has been posted from you aside from you stating you have 8-meg, then drops to 5-meg... So maybe post in the direct forum and ask them to monitor your line.
