uverse upgrade? (interleave/unbundle internet?)
I just had some AT&T techs come to the door and explain about a fiber upgrade they are offering in the neiborhood to the u-verse.
I currently use ATT DSL, the 6mbit speed.
First, it sounds like I could order the bundle with the 12 or 18 mbit internet speed, cancel the TV part after one month, and keep paying the internet part to keep the 2 or 3 times faster speed. Is that correct?
Second, from what I can tell, going to U-Verse will add something like 20ms ping (about 1/50th of a second) time to all game servers because of the interleaving?
I dont care much about if theres DNS issues, I can hard set DNS.
Any other things that I should be aware of?
Thanks!

i ordered it with tv , phone , and internet 18 megabit plan.
got rid of the tv and i just kept voice and internet
( saving boat loads off my phone bill now)
as far total latency addition.. I am only get8ms more than what i did with my fastaccess dsl from ATT SE. First hop instead of being 10-12 ms i have 20-21 ms
dns is annoying but i don't hard code it being that all my computers are laptops. and i use them outside the house.

So you still are using the 18mbit right now? Ok good, so the door to door people seem to be right that you can cancel the TV and keep the faster internet.
My first hop is 7 ms right now, so if it goes to 20ms total, then that means only 13ms more, thats not that much.

Re: uverse upgrade? (interleave/unbundle internet?)
You only have an option of interleave for the HSIA and it adds a minimum of 7.9 ms latency delay. You should expect it to be about 16 ms higher ping latency to many game servers.
There are also some routing differences so if you live or die for gaming and low pings to the gaming server, post your target game servers and others can post their ping times to your game servers.

If it was optional, then I could turn it off, from what I can tell from the sticky and otherwise, everyone on uverse internet is forced to have it.
Anyway, I don't live & die for gaming, I play things like TF2 and Left 4 Dead, and I think in 99% of cases I wouldn't notice an increase of 15-20ms in case of my gameplay experiance. I mean it would be great if I didn't have the increase, but I just don't think I would notice it. For instance, on L4D, valve's matchmaking often puts me into servers that are 100 ping or more.

Yea TF2 and L4D, latency doesn't affect those games as much as games like Counter-Strike Source. With U-Verse if your FTTN then you have the increased latency, but i believe if your FTTP then the latency is alot lower, but don't quote me on that because i can't remember exactly.

FTTP isn't on a interleaved profile since it's fiber to your house. Unless your in a new development you'll be FTTN.

Damn your on florida and only have about 8ms more then before. I'm almost double the latency now from regular fastaccess DSL, and it just seems to be getting worse.

thats not normal then

Same here. The U-verse interleaving adds an additional 10ms or so. Anything else is a routing difference, and is not specific to U-verse technology.
