[Signals] Prepping for the new Extreme 50 install
Hello,
I just signed up for the new Extreme 50 (Seattle). I have a very old Comcast cable running to the house on the outside. It is not currently in use and has not been in use for at least 12 years. I would like to have the modem be installed in a very specific location.
Question: do you think I can splice the old comcast cable with a piece of new, Quad shield one, myself (I have done this work before ) or should I let comcast techs do it and hope that they will listen to me and route it exactly to my specs? The new cable will be going through the wall, into the closet and into the wiring closet. I would like to avoid extra holes in my wall... Also, would splicing coax impact the signal quality for the type of service (50/10) I am getting ?
Thanks!

Since that line is so old, they will probably run a new one all the way from the tap. I would let them do it, unless you have some really strange or hard way you want it run.

Since it sounds like you want it a specific way you will likely need to run the cable
but I think you should let the CCtech put the ends on so that both you and them know that its done right
and as for splicing just put a grounding block on your house(might already be one but it might need to be replaced due to age and/or quality)
but olny run the cable inside the house to the grounding block don't run it past that as the cable after the grounding block is theirs to deal with

Thanks all for the helpfull replies! I think I will just run the length of cable to the outside grounding block but will leave terminations to the CC techs.
I will post my findings once the install is done.

As the others said being that it is a specific way you want it ran I would recommend you run it yourself. However do it correctly. The use of Quad Shield cables is not really necessary.
Also Do not just splice into an existing line. One input line from the groundblock to your central location. The central location should be where all your cables for your house terminate. So that there isnt multiple splitter locations they should all run back to that one location.
If you run the lines and do it correctly..you will be the techs best friend lol. If you run them and their all messed up and done incorrectly you could be the techs worst nightmare ;)

Re: [Signals] Prepping for the new Extreme 50 install
Thanks all again for the great input.
Today ran 40ft 3.0 GhZ cable into the house. Tech came out, terminated both ends and actually just spliced to the outside line himself. No grounding block and I forgot to ask (should I have?) Tech was happy and done in about 30 min.
Runnig SB6210 D3, margins OK, 2xchannels bonded. Getting good margins at 37 db, 6ms ping to the gateway. Top rated speedtest was about 20down/12up to San Francisco.

That seems a bit slow for the 50/10... Did your modem config get updated?

Yep, got one more update/reboot, getting 46 down 9 up to an Oregon server (about 300 miles)
