Installation, Flashing Red Light

I got AT&T's DSL Xtreme 6.0 to test it out vs my horrible cable connection and I'm already having trouble getting this thing set up. I followed the steps in the installation CD, I even called tech support. Because the DSL light is flashing red they couldn't really help me. I'm using the 2701HG-B Gateway. They said my account is active as of 4PM CST today. Their only advice was to leave it plugged in all night and try again tomorrow. I'm curious, could this be faulty wiring for the phone line? We tried setting this up on two phone outlets, neither would work. I live in military housing and would think the phone lines work. Any help?

Re: Installation, Flashing Red Light

Flashing red light on the 2701 means no DSL signal received, so there's not much they can do over the phone.

It's possible the circuit hasn't been turned up yet. It's also possible the circuit was turned up broke.

I've never worked in military housing, but I'm guessing they might have either an INI:
»AT&T Southeast Forum FAQ »INI?

Or an ONI/NID:
»AT&T Southeast Forum FAQ »NID (Network Interface Device)?

If you can locate one or the other, plug the 2701 into the test jack and see if the light turns green. If not, it's probably time for a truck roll to resolve the situation.

BTW, thanks for your service.

I took off the cover to the phone jack and guess what? It's not even connected! I connected the wires to the plastic piece by color and it still didn't work. I don't know crap about electrical work so I'm still looking online for an answer to see if I'm doing this wrong or what.

Thank you!

When you plug in a telephone, do you get dialtone on it?

We just have cell phones, not a landline. I can't figure out where I'm screwing up. I've connected the wires to the phone jack. What could possibly be wrong other than that? Bad wiring? I have a feeling I'll have to have housing send an electrician out here tomorrow to find out what's going on.

Depending on certain factors, even dry dsl may have dialtone or at least battery on the line. If you plug in a phone and just hear nothing at all such as yourself blowing into the phone, it may either be the jack or not even hooked up to the right line outside if this is a multiple tenant unit.

Re: Installation, Flashing Red Light

I'm assuming you've ordered SAFA, meaning internet connectivity only with no phone service. In ATT/SE that includes a dial tone, although it's totally useless for anything but circuit identification.

To repeat the question my esteemed colleague and fellow phoneman asked, do you get a dial tone?

For the time being ignore the online guides and other such.

I think that question has been answered:

My wife got it working, LOL. I did a speed test and it's 3 times faster than my 8mbps cable internet was. WOW!
