Fiber question
I still have a copper landline, so installing DSL Extreme fiber means installing fiber from scratch. It looks like my landline options are to keep the copper or order FIOS over the new fiber. I'm OK with either of those, though I favor keeping the copper. Has anyone gone that route yet? I would hope that it's as easy as ordering service, then simply checking in with the installation tech to make sure the existing wiring remains.

Re: Fiber question
If you have existing phone service over copper the Verizon technician is supposed to leave that phone service on the copper.
Thanks

Re: Fiber question
I can tell you my experience. Order DSLExtreme fiber. Some activity over the next few days each on a different day: utilities marked, proposed drop bury path marked (all underground here), drop buried, culminating on the ninth day with the Verizon tech installing the FTAS service in 1.5 hours. The copper was not touched in any way except for the marking of its location for the fiber burial digging. I had DSL and POTS (both from Verizon) over the copper at the time, and they both continued to function.

Re: Fiber question
We also ordered fiber through DSLE. The Verizon tech left the existing copper alone completely.
Also, depending on how picky the ONT they put in is, your existing router may/may not work. The tech couldn't get the ONT to give my Netgear WNR2000 an IP address (something about cross-connects). However, the Westell 9100 Verizon included is a pretty competent router with a ton of options.
So far, very happy with the fiber.

I assume you have a cat5 connection to the ONT, correct?
I doubt this had anything to do with "cross-connects".
Did the tech attempt to release the WAN DHCP lease?
FIOS DHCP leases are MAC address bound between the router and the ONT. When swapping routers, it is imperative to release your DHCP lease, otherwise, the new router may not be able to obtain a DHCP lease.
There are several ways to release your DHCP lease:
•Via router GUI. The Westell router provides this function. Some, but not all, third party routers also provide this function.
•Power off router for two hours. FIOS standard DHCP lease interval is 2 hours. When the existing DHCP lease has expired, the new router should be able to obtain a new DHCP lease.
•Clone the MAC address of the old router to the new router.
To release DHCP lease on the Westell 9100EM router:
•Click on MY NETWORK icon at the top
•Select NETWORK CONNECTIONS from the menu on the left.
•Select BROADBAND CONNECTION (coax or ethernet) depending on your connection to the ONT.
•Select CONFIGURE CONNECTION
•Click RELEASE
•Click OK
Disconnect the router immediately to prevent it from re-requesting a DHCP lease.

Re: Fiber question
It is cat5. The lease was my first guess as well, but the tech and the tech he called was unable to manually break the lease. It always errored out and not even the Westell would get an IP after the error so they rebooted the ONT and set it up with the Westell.
I probably could have pushed to have the existing router connected, but after 2 hours of install and 2 hours of the tech futzing around, I decided to cut my losses.
