My DSL Xtreme 3.0 is down to 2.0?

My connection seems quite slow lately and I just did a speakeasy test and I getting like 2meg down if I'm lucky when I always get 2800-2900 down.

How can I find out what is wrong?

Thanks.

Thanks, I've seen all that before.

My speed just dropped within the last day or two.

Anyone have any idea why my speed just dumped all of a sudden?

Maybe if you followed the FAQ and then posted your findings, we would have an idea.

OK, I have no idea what I'm doing and need help.

Nothing has changed on either of my systems so I don't know what could be wrong.

Aw, don't feel bad...Mine is always like that! Today is a good day for my DSL though...=)

But seriously, your stats are fine...
I hate to be Captain Obvious, but have you reset the modem?

Yes, I've reset the modem.

For the past 6 months I've been getting a steady 2800-2900 down and now all of a sudden I'm getting 1800-1900 down.

What could have happened?

I'll be calling them on Monday and see what they say.

Where are you measuring your speed? Maybe it's the speed test and not your line.

Speakeasy as I've always been.

I apologize if you've been asked this before.. but I have to ask..

- Are you behind a router?
- Are you connected directly to the DSL modem? (Ethernet, not wireless.)
- Have you tried testing the speed test on another computer?

Keep in mind that Speakeasy.net's speed test site has several servers to choose from. Using the Atlanta or Dallas server would probably be your best bet.

Re: My DSL Xtreme 3.0 is down to 2.0?

Not behind a router.

Both of these computers are connected via wired Ethernet

Both of these computers test the same.

I always use the Atlanta site.

I always had 2800-2900 down but the past 3-5 days I'm getting anywhere from 1500-1900 which sucks when I'm paying for 3 meg service.

Wonder what could have happened?

Re: My DSL Xtreme 3.0 is down to 2.0?

Just called AT&T and they ran all their tests over the phone and are sending a tech out tomorrow.

This all started about 3-4 days ago when the Bellsouth mail was out and we noticed the red light on the modem come on a couple of times.

Also noticed that same day an AT&T guy monkeying around in the box down the street.
I sure they screwed something up in there.

Do you guys think a tech coming out to the house is going to be a waste of time?

The tech may start at your house, but if the symptoms point elsewhere (s)he should be able to follow it to the source. Since you are experiencing the reported problem, starting at your location makes sense from a troubleshooting standpoint.

OK, The tech just came out and tested everything in the house and said everything was fine except for the slow download speed.

Went to the box down the street and changed the Port and now we are back up to speed.

He said the port was bad.

I told him that too many AT&T people monkeying around in that box was the problem.

Thanks.

While a tech can indeed do things at a crossbox, DSLAM, or elsewhere that can unintentionally negatively impact a circuit, it is extremely unlikely that a tech did anything to cause a DSLAM port card to go bad.

He just said that he change the port and now everything is back up to speed.

I asked about 6MEG and he said that he has no idea when it will be available here :(

What does it mean that he changed the port?

What exactly did the tech do up at the box?

Re: My DSL Xtreme 3.0 is down to 2.0?

A DSLAM has plug-in cards with multiple connections (one for each user). A port is a physical connection to a specific circuit on one of those cards. The tech might have moved your wire pair to a different physical connection, or he might have changed the card itself. It all depends on whether the tech actually changed the "port" or actually changed the "port card" (I have no way of knowing).

From your point of view, it really does not matter, because either way you now are going through different circuitry in the DSLAM.
