I replaced it, because it just suddenly decided to stop working, with a Netgear WGR614v6. The DSL "modem" is a Speedstream 4100 The house does have an alarm, but it, and all my DirecTV boxes, are connected to my Fax line, my main line carries the DSL. There, I think I got 'em all. |

I had some problems with the SBC software, and will not install it on any of my computers. The computer that had the SBC software on it has been reformatted and Windows reloaded. If you really need me to, I think I can come up with a "sacrificial lamb" computer to load the SBC software on. |

The AT&T techs say that the initial burst is normal. I've found that if I pause the download for a second or two the speed will increase, and then, almost immediately, start to slowly decrease again. I've never run into anything like this before, its done it with several different routers, and 2 different computers. |

I probably could turn off the Windows firewall since the Netgear router has a firewall built into it. The one thing is that the other computer had the exact same problem, and it was running the "standard" copy of Windows XP Pro. I set up the router to do the authentication for the net, I'm told that there is a way to have the modem do it, but I never checked into how to do it. |
| dksteve join:2002-11-19 Pasadena, CA | YOU WROTE:Windows firewall is running & YES turn off the Windows firewall since the Netgear router has a firewall built into it. Otherwise you will get conflicts where the dsl connection will go down repeatedly, Windows Firewall is part of you OS it will always take priority and will cause the connection to fail. |
