Comcast Offers Broadband Price For Life Promotion $42.95 for 12Mbps (if you bundle our endless TV service price hikes), forever... 01:04PM Friday Mar 21 2008 by Karl tags: prices · competition · business · cable · Comcast · Qwest.net Tipped by JSRoman
BizJournals is reporting that Comcast is now offering customers a fixed price for life without a long term contract. Qwest offers their own fixed DSL price for life plan, but it requires a two-year contract, and our users have stated that since you can often negotiate a better deal after one year, it's not particularly worth it. At the moment this appears to be a New Mexico deal aimed at countering Qwest's offer: The service offers up to 12 megabytes of download speed (sic) with Comcast's patent-pending PowerBoost technology. It costs $42.95 per month for Comcast cable video subscribers. And, unlike other price-for-life offers, the program does not require a long-term contract, so customers won't be strapped to early termination fees. Perhaps our resident Comcast users can mention in the comment section below if they've seen this promotion elsewhere. Comcast originally started offering two-year contracts in response to Qwest and Verizon's own long-term lockdowns, but this non-contract promotion is new. If evil robot overlords attack, our infrastructure crumbles and the price of bandwidth skyrockets -- this could be a very good deal in 2024. Otherwise, with the cost of bandwidth consistently dropping and DOCSIS 3.0 coming, most are probably better off waiting, watching, and negotiating better deals with the company every so often. update: a user points out Comcast has a website for the promotion. Price for life - What about Bandwidth
So, you get the price for life.
What if you use too much bandwidth (amount not published) ? Can they give you the boot.
Assume in a couple of years, its time for a price hike. Can they give you the boot saying you use too much bandwidth ?
I would say it is not price for life, but, price for now.

companies always reserve the right to cancel subs. you would have to use a lot of bandwidth for them to turn you off. people would have to download movies like all day. i download lots of stuff and never have any issues with them

doesn't sound so bad
It depends on the upload speed, of course. There's no risk involved for the customer, if they can cancel without termination fees. I'm not sure why Comcast bothers with calling it a contract, but whatever.
They'd probably attract more customers if they just advertised that they will never raise the price on their 12Mbps service, and no contract. I guess the trick is the bundling, they can raise the price on the TV service and you're still paying more. A contract implies a 2 year price guarantee for the whole bundle, however.
I don't see a downside for consumers, if there is a better deal then take it :)

* ding! *
This come-on requires you to keep Comcast video product which has never seen a price increase it didn't like. If you decide to go to satellite you lose your "lifetime" pricing for HSI.
This is nothing more than a way to lock people into their bundled product (which certainly will not be price-frozen) while keeping the easily-distracted confused into thinking they are getting a deal.
They aren't. It's a scam.

Re: doesn't sound so bad
It's not really a scam if the Internet price doesn't rise and the video price does. They're still holding to their word, if their word only says the Internet price won't rise.
Otherwise, how is it a scam? No one is going to deny that Comcast raises rates on video service.
So wouldn't it be more of a scam, especially since there are no contract penalties with this deal, to NOT get the $42.95 deal? I mean, if the price on your TV is going to raise then the price on the Internet is probably going to raise too. So why not get a fixed price on the Internet?
It's only a scam if they trick you into buying video from them when you don't already have it just to get the low Internet price.

56K modem for life
Imagine 10 years ago if a company was offering a 56K modem connection "for life" for $17.95. Might have sounded good at the time, but probably not too useful for most of us now. I suspect 12Mbps will be viewed in the same light in 10 years, esp. with the presumably crappy upload speed that is part of this deal.

Re: doesn't sound so bad
Now seriously, you don't think that requiring cable TV service to get a "lifetime price" on HSI is not a come-on?
So you've got your guaranteed forty-three bucks of HSI but in order to keep it you have to pay an additional $25 per month (for the sake of argument) in video service fees over the next five years. You don't think that somewhere in that video price increase is not a hidden HSI price increase? What's the difference? You really think that Comcast does not cross-subsidize in order to keep the only part they have any local competition on--HSI--artificially priced?
And what if you decide to go to satellite like I said? It's a marketing parlor trick. A way to "offer" something of zero value.

Since there is no contract, I don't see a scam.
If you notice that your video price increased more than normal customers, then you cancel your service.
If it was in a contract with an ETF, then you'd have a point.

I've had Azureus running pretty much non-stop since back when ET was still online.
Never had an issue with BT blocking, never had a nasty letter from Comcast.
I've had the modem upgrade once due to age, and one defective unit replaced.
I've had two outages in that time, neither of which exceeded 4 hours.
We have the deal where if you have HSI, *basic* cable is $5 a month. That's the only reason I even have any sort of cable TV.
I don't get why people think they *need* all possible cable channels. Is it the same dynamic that requires people to eat themselves sick at a buffet to avoid feeling 'ripped off?'
I just download the shows I actually want to see via BT and be done with it.
I watch at most 2 hours of TV a night.
That still seems like a lot to me.
I'm confused also why people think everything must always get cheaper forever.
There is a certain floor for everything.
HSI prices are not going to be suddenly be cut in half, and I'd very glad of that.
To cut prices in half would require outsourcing more jobs, and I doubt there are enough left to make the nut anyway.
Comcast isn't perfect, but they provide more reliable bandwidth cheaper than anyone else in my area.
DSL is a joke.
The bright lights that pioneered the technology left for greener pastures 20 years ago and haven't looked back.
What's left are some talentless hacks trying to milk the last profits out of a dated technology, rather than trying to actually innovate anything.

typically purported "deals" offered by companies are rather weighted in the company's favor----were it weighted in the customer's favor the company would eventually go out of business. i for one think comcast grossly overcharges---particularly in areas lacking fios competition. i'm considering going to directtv soon & saving circa $30/month. bub

what about throughput?
The TV price will continue to rise, and the actual broadband throughput will probably go down. You'll eventually have "12 Mbps" service but see only 13K/s throughput unless you're using it at 5 AM. Comcast 12Mbps service is more like 3Mbps much of the time; at least that's what I experienced at a friend's place in Minneapolis.
At least with Qwest you get the advertised speed (minus ATM overhead).

The guarantee is totally worthless for these reasons:
1. You have to buy TV with it and they raise the price of TV at 3-4X the rate of inflation.
2. Soon, Comcast will be going to a pay-per-bit price model so all current plans will be discontinued and you'll surely see a price rise for the new plans in areas with no competition.

Even at a fair price, is it worth it to have to deal with Comcast? every other month I get a billing error (always in their favor.....) calling them is becoming a nightmare with dropped calls, long hold times and rude customer (di)service. Comcast has gone downhill since they adopted the new corporate philosophy of cut-rate service and multi-million dollar ad campaigns.
In short, they suck at any price.
