Comcast Wishes You A Happy Rate Hike Season It's that time of year again.... 10:47AM Friday Sep 04 2009 by Karl Bode tags: prices · business · bandwidth · cable · consumers · Comcast
It's once again cable rate hike season for Comcast customers, who'll be seeing higher bills depending on where you live, and depending on what competition Comcast sees in your market. Washington state residents will be the first lucky winners, given that Qwest is the primary phone company and telcoTV is a non-issue. In Washington, Comcast will be issuing a flurry of higher rates starting October 6. The hikes will cover not only TV service (traditionally blamed on higher broadcaster fees), but also assorted other hardware fees. According to a memo obtained by Broadband Reports, Limited Basic customers will see an average increase of $1.17 per month, while Comcast's entry level digital cable tier will jump $1.70 from $55.75 to $57.45. Comcast's digital additional outlet fee, used for customers with additional modems or set top boxes, will increase $1 from $5.10 to $6.10. Customers who rent modems or eMTAs for digital voice will also see their $3 monthly rental fee bumped to $5. The memo, which provides talking points to employees when dealing with consumers, rhetorically asks: "does it make sense for us to raise prices given the state of the economy?" The memo responds to its own question with an unequivocal yes, though executives in the memo insist that imposing additional rate hikes during a sour economy was "discussed at the highest levels of the company" (you know, by the guys making nearly $25 million annually) and "was not taken lightly" by said millionaires. Comcast reminds employees that DirecTV's basic tier jumped 30% this year, while several FiOS tiers have jumped $10 a month. As is usually the case, Comcast blames the higher costs on the higher costs of programming (specifically sports), but also lays the blame on "new advanced set top boxes and modems" and DOCSIS 3.0 network upgrades. The same upgrades the company in 2007 proudly proclaimed could be funded by "couch change." Comcast's second quarter earnings jumped 53%, and the carrier posted a three month net income of nearly a billion dollars. On the positive side, the hikes are slightly less than they've been in years past, something recently predicted by at least one analyst, who claimed this year's cable rate hike season would be only 50% as potent as in recent years due to recession and telcoTV competition. Comcast customers outside of the Washington market upset they're being left out of the festivities will likely soon get hikes of their own. If your provider is raising rates, please drop us a line. Here's an idea or two...
Comcast blames the higher costs on the higher costs of programming (specifically sports), but also lays the blame on "new advanced set top boxes and modems" and DOCSIS 3.0 network upgrades.
Simple solution, Comcast (and all other providers): move all sports channels to a sports tier where they belong. Then drop the cost of basic cable without the sports tier down to reflect the savings. Those who are interested in having the sports tier can then purchase it as a premium package, just like movies and pay-per-view. This way those who do not care about receiving channels like ESPN don't have their bills inflated because of it.
These companies could also offer access to the sports tier on a pay-per-view type basis, charging some fee for 48 hour access over weekends or the like, for casual sports viewers. (Weekend access fees, when measured on a per-day basis, would be higher than just buying monthly access to the sports tier of course.)
Or, even better yet, why not just offer ala carte access to all channels-- like many users have been requesting for many years? The technology required to do this is in place, for the most part. The only thing stopping it is broadcasters, who bundle channels together to force viewers into paying for channels they neither want nor care about.

Comcast did that and the FCC, after complaints from the NFL, forced them to move it back to regular channel lineup.

That's too bad. When did that happen-- it should have been more widely publicized. And Comcast should include a sentence like "Complaints from the NFL to the FCC, forcing us to carry sports channels, are part of the reason your bill is increasing this year." in every bill each time the price they charge their consumers increases.
If the NFL can use the government as their tool to force consumers to pay higher prices, then cable/satellite companies should be able to fight back by making inflammatory statements in their literature that is distributed to the public.

There's a simple solution to that too. How long do you think Disney would last before they caved in if Comcast, Time Warner, Dish, and DirecTV dropped all Disney channels from the lineup? A week? A month? During that time period, the cable/satellite companies could compensate consumers by dropping prices on their service dramatically.
Disney relies on the income from pimping out this entertainment very heavily. I think that they would give in quickly if there were an organized boycott of their programming by the major players in the cable and satellite industry.
It's too bad this will never happen. Sometimes reality sucks.

I have DirecTV and am considering doing the same when my contract runs out. It's not that I dislike their service or equipment, it's that I don't find it worth the nearly $100 I pay for it each month.
Before I switched to DirecTV from Comcast, I had two HTPC boxes set up for recording programs, each with a bunch of TV tuner cards in it. We get enough OTA TV here in the DC area that I should be able to pick up most of what I watch with a decent antenna. The rest of my entertainment (movies, etc.) can come from instant streaming from Netflix and the like.
If I really need more channels than that, I'll get the basic programming tier from Comcast. I still use them for internet, and by the time they drop my internet price $10/mo for having "bundled" service the extra cost shouldn't be too bad. I'll just need to pick up another 1 or 2 HDHomeRun boxes to be able to record up to 6 digital channels at once and I'm all set.

* Allow customers to choose their own channels
This is the exact reason why I don't have cable TV. Not that I am admitting to piracy, but you have to wonder why people would rather pirate a TV show that doesn't have commercials vs pay to watch the TV show and commercials. It's kind of counter-intuitive if you think about it:
Free: Commercial free
Pay: Commercials
If the programming was commercial free, then I would most certainly consider cable TV.

Depends on if the broadcasters choose to go "must carry". If so, then cable transmits the channels providing no compensation. On the flip side, the broadcasters can choose not to go "must carry", which means the cable companies have the option to negotiate carriage arrangements with the broadcaster. I believe most cable companies have gone through this ugly feud over the last couple of years with Sinclair Broadcast Group and a few other broadcast station owners.

I am in an area where there is no telco TV so they can charge whatever they want. The rep suggested I bundle my service but I only pay $40+ tax for phone and DSL... and $13 for the cable. For $70, I would only be getting only 1 or 2 of the services on Comcast. No thanks, I will pass...
I wish I could get a la carte channels as well without the strings.

Re: Here's an idea or two...
There are only 10 ABC O&Os and they look like crap since they have an HD subchannel.

Re: Here's an idea or two...
1) Wasn't it the NFL Network?
2) Didn't Comcast continue to offer THEIR sports channels in the basic tiers?

I wonder how much will my rates go up... I would switch to satellite, but my apartment lease forbids the dishes.
The FCC has laws that say they can't do that.

Re: Cut the cord
I also "cut the cord" about a year ago from the glut of mind rot and higher costs of cable. Hulu, youtube, and Netflix provides all I need for TV. I can choose what I want to watch with little or no commercials. Much, much happier.

In a some obscure ways, satellite dishes and broadband internet antennas can indeed be prohibited.
The FCC's OTARD rule primarily prohibits the indiscriminate banning of the placement of antennas. If a city ordinances adopt the National Electric Code recommendations, then those recommendations become law and are exempt from OTARD protection.

Can an apartment complex prohibit you from mounting a dish on your patio with its own unattached concrete block mount that is properly grounding, and fed through your window? No.

Re: Just Great!!!
Hi All,
I keep reading in the forums where the nfl network has been moved to a different 'tier', I believe I read the digital classic / preferred tier. I live in the 32218 zip code area, as far as I know, the only way we can receive the nfl network is on the sports and entertainment tier that we are paying extra for. Does this apply to anyone else in here ?
