RCN Offers Less For More
Hikes prices while rateshaping HD signals

Users in our RCN forum report that the cable operator has raised their rates for a number of channel packages (by as much as 15-20%) and the cost of set top box rental for most RCN users. This is particularly annoying to customers in our forums who say the cable provider is compromising HD quality in order to offer more HD channels, something Comcast was taken to task for back in April. "I know this won't be a popular answer, I understand that there will be groups of people who are excited about the additional HD offerings, while some will be upset to see small aspects of shaping," says an RCN employee in our forums.

Is it any wonder?

That Fios is kicking their butt? Hopefully it won't be long before Fios is available in our area and we can make the switch.

Anyone...

know if all their prices are changing or just certain packages, just TV service?

it's kind of odd they would change prices in the middle of the year.

competition here

rcn has done so much damage to itself that people in my housing complex have either gone back to time warner cable or sign up with just installed fios. our unit is part of stuyvesant town that has over 10000 apartments so we're fortunate to have a choice of 3 providers. i dont know what rcn bosses is thinking when competition is all around and they raise prices.

FIOS was $80 cheaper and SOOOOOO much better then RCN, thats what they need. Worse quality then it already was.

I thought Fios cherrypicked their neighborhoods and didn't provide service to the ghetto. Has this changed?

Heh, I live in an RCN city, and RCN won't offer me service. Comcast does. If FioS becomes available, I'll have to call RCN the cherry-picker.

Just like everything else

The price for everything is going up, the only thing that's not going up are peoples wages/salaries. Companies are willing to charge more and give a hell of a lot less.

Re: competition here

Wouldn't a ghetto neighborhood be cherry picking?

Large number of potential customers with little money for recreational activities outside the home would make for a large number of subscribers in a small area.

it's all about choices...

and the cable companies wonder (probably not) why many of us are planning to go to satellite tv in the very near future...

Rcn, Pffft!

Who's the dinosaur now? Huh?
RCN should just go out of business.. they screwed themselves 7 way from Sunday. Even docsis 3.0 cableco's will eat RCN for breakfast in little more than a year..

rcn

RCN restructured their basic cable packages for my gf's condo building. MTV is no longer included in basic cable. I really can't believe that they will last another 5yrs without a major overhaul.

Re: competition here

RCN legally is a cherry picker, they aren't a cable tv company, they are an open video service company (FCC's name for a cable company with ILEC style wholesaling) and those dont have any build out criteria.

While I have fully enjoyed RCN for the past ~2 years....they have a horrible Customer Service line (India!), bundled with confusing price packages, you are told you are on one price package, but then when you get your bill it's $50 more!

Besides that, they have now started to Rateshape EVERY HD Channel (including the Locals) as I pointed out in that thread. So we get less quality for more money.

RCN keeps telling us "Analog Crush is coming", yet there is no date when it's going to start happening or when it will be complete. Christmas is coming too you know. So is April Fool's Day.

Overall, RCN's quality of service has gone down 10 fold over the past 2 years.

jt6...........your point is well taken---they all do it. however, if (really when) i change our tv from comcast to direct tv, i will save in year #1 $40 to $50 per month and in year #2 $20 to $30 per month over what i now pay comcast. (we have two hd/dvr units) additionally, i'll be getting more channels & more hd channels. the simple math as i type this is making me wonder why i have not done it yet.........bub

Please cite one specific instance of FiOS cherry picking an area and not providing service to "the ghetto".

Re: ....

My cable bill went up by 14%

My internet speed went down by 15% (now it is "up to 20mbps")

Not the best way to compete against FIOS and Slingbox.
